Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery brings story time alive with art

Kids Activating Art

The Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and First 5 Forever have joined forces to offer the Toowoomba Region an educational program that incorporates stories, songs, rhymes and art for children in their developing years.

The Activating Art program is a story time with themes and learning experiences based on current exhibitions on display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

Environment and Community portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia said the program has a strong focus on early childhood education and supporting the needs of children in their first five years.

“The activities are presented in a nurturing yet fun environment and incorporate stories, songs and art that encourage play-based learning as well as skill development, Cr Ramia said.

“This program is where a picture really does become a thousand words!

“Each session is unique and is prepared by a joint team from the Gallery and First 5 Forever.

“Guardians are encouraged to return to the Gallery in their own time and revisit the exhibition and resource materials with their child.”

Wanita, a mother of three children who participated in last year’s program, said Activating Art is the family’s favourite First 5 Forever program.

“This activity brings the community to the art gallery and makes them aware of what is happening in our cultural programs. It creates more community around that,” Wanita said.

“As a mother with three kids you do feel like everything is focused on your children whereas this is something we can really get involved in together and then take home to work on.”

Attendance is free and resource materials from the Library are provided.

Sessions are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 9.30am to 10.30am.

Places are limited and bookings are essential - Bookings for forth-coming sessions will open at the conclusion of the previous session, closing Friday before each session. Call 131 872 to book your child’s place now.

The First 5 Forever program aims to provide strong emergent literacy foundations and life-long learning capabilities for all Queensland children aged 0-5 years, by directly supporting parents and primary caregivers as their child’s first and most important educator.
