Winter urban design seminar series

The Winter Urban Design Seminar Series are part of the Toowoomba Region Urban Design Initiative (TRUDI), which aims to deliver 'The best of city and country. The best of urban design.'

The seminar series was launched in 2012 and runs between May and July each year. The purpose of the Winter Urban Design Seminar Series is to bring the principles and concepts of urban design to the community to raise awareness and to understand the challenges and opportunities in our urban environment. These are free events, open to our community and beyond. Anyone interested in urban design, placemaking and the community should consider attending.

Past seminars from 2014 and 2015 are available for viewing on council's YouTube channel.

What is urban design?

"Urban design is both a process and an outcome of creating localities in which people live, engage with each other, and the physical place around them" Australian Urban Design Protocol, 2011

Urban design is concerned with the arrangement, appearance and function of our suburbs, towns and cities. It is both a process and an outcome. Urban design involves many different disciplines including planning, development, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, economics, law and finance, among others.

Urban design can significantly influence the economic, environmental, social and cultural outcomes of a place.

Architect and author Peter Buchanan said "Urban design is essentially about placemaking, where place is not just a specific space, but all the activities and events that it makes possible." Placemaking is an open, inclusive process that is effective in making people feel attached to the places where they live, and make improvements in their communities. We are all Place Makers.

Who is involved?

The Winter Urban Design Seminar Series is our initiative, but the speakers and presenters are sourced from many disciplines, locations and backgrounds.

Urban design is a broad concept with far-reaching effects. It encompasses many disciplines from planning, engineering and architecture to the arts, hospitality and community groups. The speakers and presenters at the seminars will vary depending on the discussion topic.

Who are these seminars for?

Everyone is welcome. These seminars are aimed at encouraging ideas, concepts and debates centred around improving our communities within the Toowoomba Region. Anyone who is interested in the betterment of their neighbourhood, town, city or region should consider attending.
