Winter Wonderland

Toowoomba's Civic Precinct is set to be transformed into a winter wonderland and will provide a magical experience for young and old from 22 June to 15 July. There'll be a skating rink, nightly outdoor Christmas themed movies, carols, food and entertainment. The magic won't stop there; the CBD will come alive with lights to create an incredible winter event not to be missed. So get your winter woollies out and join in the fun!

 

Ice skating

Get out your ice skates for days of fun on Toowoomba's first ice skating rink. The rink will be operational in the Civic Precinct (grassed area behind the Toowoomba City Library - corner of Herries and Victoria Streets) from Friday 22 June until Sunday 15 July 2018 and will be available for 11 skating sessions per day (allowing 160 skaters per session). 

This family friendly event is ideal for people of all ages and skill levels with skating aids available for hire. You can also organise kids parties, group bookings and corporate functions on the ice!

Christmas movie nights (free)

Popular Christmas movies will be held beside the library near the water feature during the Winter Wonderland event. The movies will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights starting at 6pm running from 22 June to 15 July. Food and drink will be available.

Winter garden workshops with Brian Sams

Brian Sams will be holding four FREE winter themed workshops (maximum of 35 people per class). Come along to a 3 hour workshop by local horticulturist Brian Sams to learn about:

  • Inspirational winter gardens – great plants for winter colour and fragrance, great garden design ideas for winter and potting for winter colour.
  • Productive winter gardens – fruit tree pruning ideas, vegetable garden plants for winter, crop rotation ideas and companion planting.

Winter themed painting and screen printing workshops with Jon Vargas

Jon Vargas will be conducting a series of winter themed painting and screen printing workshops. Come along to a 2 hour workshop by local artist Jon Vargas to learn about:

  • Painting for beginners – an informative, hands on workshop, painting your very own winter themed canvas. A canvas, paint and brushes will be provided but please wear appropriate clothing as aprons will not be available on the day. Classes will cater for age groups 12 - 18 years and 19 years - adult. 

    The workshops will cost $25 payable to Jon Vargas in either cash or eftpos on the day at the workshop.

    Bookings are essential for 'Painting for beginners' as there is a maximum of 10 people per class. To book, call our Customer Service Centre on 131 872.

  • Screen printing for beginners – a hands-on screen printing workshop. You are welcome to bring along your own plain cotton/light coloured T-shirt to be screen printed or purchase one on site.

    Costs are $5 to bring your own t-shirt or $10 for a t-shirt purchased on the day, payable in either cash or eftpos.

    Bookings are not required for 'Screen printing for beginners'.

Crochet workshops with Erin's Crochet

Erin will be hosting four winter themed crochet workshops. Come along to a 2 hour crochet for beginners workshop to learn how to crochet a beautiful winter scarf which you can take home. Workshops cost $15 per person, payable to Erin Hermann in cash only on the day of the workshop.

The workshops are for ages 12 years and older.

Photography at night workshops with Owen Camera House

Syd Owen will be hosting eight night-time classes, capturing different aspects of the magical lights and Winter Wonderland scenery. Come along and learn how to operate a digital camera for night-time photography.

All workshop sessions will run for 1 hour and cost $20 per person, payable in either cash or eftpos at the workshop. The workshops are suitable for ages 18 years and older.

You will be required to bring your own digital camera, memory card, tripod and warm clothes.

Winter Pokemon party                                                                                                                              

Calling all Pokemon trainers! Come along and join in the fun of winter at a special seasonal Pokemon party! Free the frozen Pokemon, and create your own wintery pokeball. Take part in a Pokemon scavenger hunt, pin the tail on the icy Abomasnow, and show off your Pokemon knowledge in our trivia challenge. It’s always an (icy) blast with Pokemon! Open to ages 8+.

Winter Wonderland school packages

From Monday 25 June - Friday 29 June 2018 school and student packages have been developed for primary and secondary schools within the Toowoomba Region and neighbouring shires. Activities include:

 

Ice skating

Get out your ice skates for days of fun on Toowoomba's first ice skating rink. The rink will be operational in the Civic Precinct (grassed area behind the Toowoomba City Library - corner of Herries and Victoria Streets).

Escape the classroom and slip on some skates this winter for an exciting new open-air activity! Perfect for all ages and abilities, ice skating allows children to step out of their comfort zone and builds a great sense of team-work and camaraderie with their peers.

Kids can share a ‘Kanga' Skate Aid, an Australian first giving children of all ages and abilities a go at improving their stability and confidence. With the option to push or sit on the Kanga, kids can work in pairs to support each other on the ice…….and have lots of fun.

What's included:

  • 45 min skate session
  • 1 skate aid per pair
  • Skate marshalls to guide/teach

Requirements:

  • Ideal for ages 9+

Art gallery events

Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery offer free guided tours for school groups. School groups of any year are welcome and the gallery caters for students from kindergarten to tertiary level with a range of interests. Enquiries from educators who would like to tailor their visit to suit their program are most welcome. Delivery can be flexible so if you have an idea, contact us to discuss your needs.
