Water spilling over Perseverance Dam

Toowoomba Regional Council’s Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has this morning issued an emergency alert for areas surrounding the Condamine River.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a major flood warning for the Condamine River with residents asked to make preparations now for possible inundation.

Areas which may be impacted include Cecil Plains, Millmerran and the surrounding Condamine River areas.

The Region’s three major dams in Cooby, Cressbrook and Perseverance are continuing to spill this morning with Council crews undertaking 24-hour on-site monitoring of the situation as rain continues.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the LGMG remained on lean forward but that the region’s District Disaster Management Group had moved to stand up to provide support and assistance to the Lockyer Valley region.

“The LDMG is coordinating with relevant emergency services and will continue to monitor advice and information from the Bureau of Meteorology,” Mayor Antonio said.

“If residents were impacted during the February/March rain event they should make preparations now for this event.

“We’ve had significant rainfall in the catchments overnight and residents who experience flooding from the Condamine River are asked to make preparations now.

“I have spoken to Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan and their situation is serious and Toowoomba is providing whatever assistance we can.

“I ask motorists to undertake essential travel only at this time and to please drive carefully and to conditions. It’s impossible for Council to sign every defect and danger on the roads so be alert and drive to the conditions.

“I cannot stress this highly enough – if it’s flooded, forget it.

“As we continue to monitor the situation, I would simply ask residents to remain alert,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Property owners who need assistance are advised to contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500.
