Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald today (September 14, 2023) paid tribute to his ‘hero’ father, John ‘Cracker’ McDonald AM, who passed away on Wednesday evening in Toowoomba.
Mayor McDonald said his father left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
“From the moment he entered a room, his humble, generous, and empathetic nature shone through, captivating the hearts of everyone around him,” Mayor McDonald said.
“Cracker possessed a unique presence, both physically and emotionally, that drew people in. His warmth and genuine care for others made him someone people always wanted to be around. He had a remarkable ability to listen, understand and provide comfort to those in need. His empathetic nature was a gift that touched the lives of many.
“In addition to his compassionate spirit, Cracker was known for his fairness and decisiveness. He approached every situation with an open mind, seeking the truth and ensuring justice prevailed. His unwavering respect for others was a testament to his character, and it remained a defining quality until the very end.
“Throughout his life, Cracker faced numerous challenges with unwavering strength and resilience. Even in the face of adversity, he remained a model patient, never once complaining or allowing his circumstances to define him. His unwavering determination and positive outlook on life were truly inspiring to all who witnessed his journey.
“There is a scene from Monty Python that perfectly encapsulates Cracker's attitude towards life. In the face of setbacks, he would simply brush them off as ‘merely a flesh wound’. His ability to find humour in difficult situations was a true testament to his character and served as a reminder to us all to find joy, even in the toughest of times.
“We have been incredibly fortunate and privileged to have had Cracker in our lives. His impact will forever be felt, and his memory will continue to inspire us all.
“For those closest to Cracker, the grieving process began long before this day. Since the onset of gradual memory loss in 2012, our hearts have been heavy with sorrow. But today, we choose to celebrate his life, to focus on the countless memories and moments of joy he brought us.
“We stand together as a family, comforting and supporting one another, and extend our condolences to all who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. May this day be a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with those we hold dear.
“I and many others will remember Cracker with tears of joy and smiles of laughter. Let us honour his legacy by embracing the love and compassion he so effortlessly shared, and may his spirit live on in our hearts, guiding us to be kind, empathetic, and resilient, just as he was.”
Mayor McDonald said he intended to carry on with his civic responsibilities, buoyed by his father’s advice to: “Put your shoulder to the wheel and get stuck into it”.
