The Toowoomba Region’s Ambassador and Town Crier Kevin Howarth proved he can be as effective as he is colourful, not to mention loud, by winning four categories at the weekend’s 36th National Town Crier Championships in Canberra.

Mr Howarth retained his mantle as Australia’s loudest Cryer with a wind-affected, but respectable 92 decibel recording on the day, which was a little off his regular competition level of more than 100 decibels. He previously won this category in 2018, 2019 and 2023.

He showed his all-round abilities by impressing the judges to win the best cry and best media campaign categories.

True to his job title, Mr Howarth was recognised as the best ambassador for his region, winning the Pat Adamson Memorial Award.

A jubilant, but slightly hoarse Mr Howarth, said the titles were a proud personal honour that reflected his love for the role.

“A blustery wind in Canberra blew shade shelters over and also sent our tricorns flying, which made our job more difficult,” Mr Howarth said.

“Crying into the wind was tricky for the competitors and the judges. It made for a most memorable day, especially when I was fortunate to win several sections.

“The job satisfaction I gain from my role is incredible.

“I attend many events around the Toowoomba Region and experience all the best features of our events and warm hospitality that greets visitors. I attend citizenship ceremonies, birthdays for centenarians and various community celebrations.

“This is my inspiration for telling people around Australia and overseas about why they should visit the Toowoomba Region.”

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Cr Geoff McDonald said he and fellow Councillors were full of praise for Kevin’s outstanding results from Canberra.

“We know Kevin will give 100% at every competition he attends. The awards are a fine reward for his wholehearted effort,” Mayor McDonald said.

“Kevin made his regular appearance at the recent Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Grand Central Floral Parade, welcomed guests at a Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games organising committee civic reception and has a host of functions in coming months.

“His enthusiasm and humour are well received at his appearances and part of the reason he is a fine Ambassador for the Toowoomba Region. He now has the Australian title to match.”

The 36th National Town Crier Championships in Canberra were held in conjunction with the Canberra Burns Club Highland Gathering.
