Make safety a top priority this festive season

As families across the Toowoomba Region unwrap gifts this Christmas, many will find shiny new bicycles and scooters under the tree.

With more riders on our roads during the holiday period, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Transport and Drainage Planning portfolio spokesperson Cr Trevor Manteufel is reminding cyclists/scooters and motorists to make safety their top priority.

“Christmas is a time for joy and family. We want everyone to enjoy their new bikes/scooters safely by following the road rules. By showing courtesy, cyclists/scooters and drivers can share the road and keep our community safe this festive season,” he said.

“We all have a role to play in making our roads safer. A little patience and awareness can prevent accidents and ensure everyone gets home to celebrate with loved ones.”

Motorists are reminded to share the road and allow a minimum space of at least one metre between the vehicle and cyclist in 60km/h zones and 1.5 metres at higher speeds when passing cyclists. Drivers should remain patient and alert, remembering that cyclists have the same rights to use the road.

Cyclists/scooters are encouraged to always wear a helmet and to make themselves visible by using bright clothing, lights and reflectors, especially during the darker parts of the day.

“Whether you’re riding a brand-new bike/scooters or driving to holiday celebrations, remember – safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Cr Trevor Manteufel said.

“Let’s make this festive season enjoyable and accident-free by respecting each other on the road.”
