Smart standpipe

Smart (automated) standpipes for potable water are installed at Crows Nest, Oakey, Wyreema, Millmerran and Pittsworth.

The standpipes are designed to provide water to businesses for commercial use and to Toowoomba Region residents who are not on town water supplies. Non-potable water is currently available for industrial purposes from a smart standpipe in Middle Ridge, Toowoomba.

The installation of the smart standpipes allows us to accurately keep track of water usage from the standpipes. This helps reduce water losses, water theft and ensure correct payment is received for the amount of water removed by the users.

Apply for a security tag (touch tag)

  1. Submit the Water - Application to draw water from a smart standpipe.
  2. A Council staff member will contact you to pay the non-refundable fee ($27.50) for a touch tag.
  3. Touch tags can be collected from one of the following offices:

Adding credit to touch tag (top-up)

The tag can be credited with a dollar amount up $999. Once credit is placed on the tag, it can be used to purchase water at the specified filling stations only. The amount of water taken is recorded and the cost is subtracted from the available credit on the tag, refer to standpipe water fees.

When more credit needs to be added to the tag, bring it to one of the above Customer Service Centres or phone 131 872. Phone top-ups can only be added in $25 increments and the tag must be inserted into a standpipe for the credit to be applied.

Touch tag care

Information, including details of the remaining credit on a touch tag, may be lost if the tag is damaged, lost or stolen. Ensure the tag is not left in the sun or allow it to get wet. This could damage the chip in the tag and void any refunds.

Remaining credit can be refunded if the touch tag is returned undamaged. If the tag is lost or stolen, the leftover credit on the tag may be forfeited, so please keep it in a safe place.
