We only have jurisdiction to act on certain noise pollution issues and share the responsibility of noise control with other government bodies. The information below outlines which authorities to contact for various noise types.

 

Aircraft noise

Air conditioning equipment and refrigeration equipment

Operated on residential land and some commercial land - contact us.

Allowable noise times and levels

Any day

  • 7am–10pm: noise no louder than 5 decibels above background noise level
  • 10pm–7am: noise no louder than 3 decibels above background noise level

 

Amplified and people noise

  • Household musical noise (eg. stereo, instrument) - contact your local police service on 131 444
  • Parties, rowdy behaviour - contact your local police service on 131 444
  • Burglar alarms (eg. house, car) - contact your local police service on 131 444
  • Concerts and events - contact us for further clarification
  • Megaphones or public address systems - contact us for further clarification
  • Council events- contact us for further clarification
  • Private events on Council land (eg: in a park)- it is recommended that you contact the event organiser directly. Otherwise, contact us for further clarification. When you call us the following steps will typically be taken (depending on the circumstances).
  1. You may be directed to make contact directly with the event organiser, another organisation (such as liquor licensing for licensed events) or the police. Wherever possible our staff will provide the relevant contact details for these other organisations.
  2. When further investigation is required by us, details are collected by our customer service officers and passed on to our environmental health branch. These details need to include your name, address, contact number and details of the issue occurring. In some circumstances one of our officers or representatives may need to attend your property for noise monitoring.

Amplifier devices other than at indoor venue or open-air event noise times and levels

Monday to Friday

  • 7am–10pm: regulated devices can be used
  • 10pm–7am: no audible* noise permitted

Saturday to Sunday

  • 8am–6pm: regulated devices can be used
  • 6pm–8am: no audible* noise permitted

Indoor venues allowable noise times and levels

Any day

  • 7am–10pm: noise no louder than 5 decibels above background noise level
  • 10pm–12am: either 3 decibels above background noise level
  • 12am–7am: no audible* noise permitted

Open-air events allowable noise times and levels

Any day

  • 7am–10pm: noise no louder than 70 decibels
  • 10pm–12am: no more than the lesser of 50 decibels or 10 decibels above background noise level
  • 12am–7am: no audible* noise permitted

 

Commercial building work

Monday to Saturday

  • 6.30am–6.30pm: noise permitted
  • 6.30pm–6.30am: no audible* noise permitted

Sunday and public holidays

  • No audible* noise permitted

 

Liquor licensed premises (eg. pub, club)

Regulated devices (eg. power tools, mowers)

Operated on residential land and some commercial land - contact us for further clarification. Regulated device means any of the following— a compressor, a ducted vacuuming system, a generator, a grass-cutter, an impacting tool, a leaf-blower, a mulcher, an oxyacetylene burner, an electrical, mechanical or pneumatic power tool.

*Audible noise is a noise that can be clearly heard by an occupier of a building which is affected/exposed to the noise. More information can be found in The Environmental Protection Act 1994.
